Measuring PR Impact: Beyond Vanity Metrics

A stack of press clips feels like proof PR is working. It rarely tells you whether any of it moved the business.

Quick Summary

Why Clip Counts And Reach Lie

In Action: Why clip counts and reach lieCrowdStrike · 2024-07-19

The July 19, 2024 global IT outage, when a faulty CrowdStrike update grounded over 6% of the world's commercial flights and disrupted hospitals, banks, and 911 systems The outage generated enormous media reach almost instantly, yet reach alone said nothing about whether the coverage was rebuilding or destroying customer trust CEO George Kurtz's initial post described the issue as 'identified, isolated, and a fix deployed' without an apology, and only issued a direct apology days later, showing that raw media reach measured exposure, not the sentiment collapse actually happening underneath it

Result: Despite blanket global coverage, CrowdStrike's stock fell roughly 23% and the company faced billions of dollars in customer losses, proof that reach and clip volume tracked none of the real damage (July 19-23, 2024).

"Reach" is usually a publication's total readership or a site's total monthly visitors, not the number of people who saw your specific mention. A story in an outlet with 5 million monthly readers does not mean 5 million people read about you, most never scroll past the homepage.

Advertising Value Equivalency (AVE), converting column inches into "equivalent ad spend", compounds the problem by pricing a mention as if it were a paid ad, ignoring that readers trust editorial coverage differently than ads and that the number is fabricated math on top of an already-inflated reach figure.

Common Mistake

The Barcelona Principles reject AVE outright: it excludes qualitative context, cannot be benchmarked consistently across outlets, and tells you nothing about whether the coverage changed anyone's mind.

Clip counts fail the same way. Ten mentions in irrelevant blogs are not worth one mention in the trade publication your buyers actually read. Volume without relevance is noise dressed up as a result.

Share Of Voice, With Context

In Action: Share of voice paired with sentimentDuolingo · 2024

Duolingo's chaotic, unscripted TikTok and social PR strategy built around its owl mascot 'Duo,' including stunts like the Dua Lipa 'obsession' bit and its viral Cybertruck-smashing video The team tracked share of voice across social and earned media alongside sentiment shifts, rather than just counting mentions or views, to check whether the chaos was actually building the brand Duolingo kept pairing rising share of voice with sentiment tracking through each stunt, using unprompted mentions in unrelated cultural moments as a signal the campaign was working, not just generating noise

Result: Daily active users increased 62% during the campaign period, and Duolingo became the top-ranked educational app in the Apple App Store (2023-2024 campaign period).

Share of voice (SOV) measures what percentage of the total conversation in your category belongs to you versus competitors, calculated as your mentions divided by total category mentions. Modern SOV analysis treats the number as a relevance indicator, not a scoreboard, it shows how present you are in conversations that matter, not whether you are winning them.

That distinction matters because SOV can rise for bad reasons, a product recall generates plenty of mentions too. This is why SOV must always travel paired with sentiment analysis: are those mentions positive, neutral, or negative, and is the ratio shifting over time?

Track SOV monthly against your two or three closest competitors, not the whole market. A rising share against the two companies your prospects actually compare you to is a real signal; a rising share against an unranked long tail of tiny players is not.

Referral Traffic, Conversions, And Message Pull-Through

This is where PR earns a seat at the revenue table. Tag every placement's backlink with UTM parameters, then pull referral sessions, conversions, and (where trackable) pipeline influenced straight from analytics and the CRM.

Modern PR measurement increasingly leans on UTM tracking, CRM integration, and tiered dashboards to connect coverage directly to business outcomes, the same discipline paid marketing has used for years, now applied to earned media.

The final check is message pull-through: did the journalist actually include your key message, your product name, your differentiator, or did they run the story and leave your point on the cutting room floor? Read every piece of coverage and score it against the three messages you briefed. A placement that mentions your company but omits your core point earned you visibility, not persuasion.

Pro Tip

Build a simple scorecard per placement: outlet relevance, sentiment, message pull-through (yes/partial/no), and any tracked referral action. Four data points beat one inflated reach number every time.

Key Takeaways

  • Retire AVE and raw reach as headline metrics, the Barcelona Principles reject AVE for good reason.
  • Track share of voice against your real competitive set, always paired with sentiment.
  • Use UTM tagging and CRM data to connect coverage to referral traffic and conversions.
  • Score message pull-through on every placement, a mention is not the same as a persuaded reader.
  • Report a scorecard, not a clip count, to show PR's actual contribution to the business.
