Build the Offer: A Segmented Exit-Intent Popup for MVMT
Objective: Given 3 visitor segments (cart abandoner, blog reader, pricing-page browser), write a matched exit-intent offer, headline, and trigger rule for each, per the lesson's Stage 2 and Stage 3 framework.
You're setting up exit-intent for MVMT's site ahead of a sale. Marketing wants one popup live within the week, but a single generic offer would waste it on visitors who are nowhere near ready to buy.
Match each segment's likely exit reason to a specific offer, write the headline, and set the trigger delay and frequency cap for each.

The process
1 step
Step 01 of 01
The lesson's Stage 2 says segmentation is where most of the performance gain lives: a cart abandoner over $50 sees a free shipping offer, a blog reader sees a content upgrade, a pricing-page visitor sees a trial prompt.
Given these 3 segments, what offer and headline does each get, and does a generic '10% off' popup fit any of them?
Procedure
- List each segment: cart value, page type, time on page
- Match each to the exit reason it most likely reflects (per Stage 3's list)
- Write one headline and one offer per segment, no shared generic offer
- Set a trigger delay (minimum 30-60s per the lesson's Common Mistake #2) and a frequency cap for each
Segment: Cart abandoner, $85 cart, 90s on checkout page Offer: Free shipping on this order Headline: 'Your order qualifies for free shipping, don't leave it behind' Trigger: 45s delay, cap 1x per 30 days Segment: Blog reader, no product page visited Offer: Downloadable buying guide (PDF) Headline: 'Not ready to buy? Grab our watch-sizing guide first' Trigger: 60s delay, cap 1x per 30 days Segment: Pricing/product page, 3+ minutes, no cart Offer: 10% first-order discount code Headline: 'Still deciding? Here's 10% to help' Trigger: 30s delay, cap 1x per 14 days
Healthy
Three distinct offers, each tied to a specific exit reason, each with its own trigger timing and frequency cap.
Unhealthy
One 'Wait! 10% off!' popup fired identically at all three segments the moment the mouse moves toward the tab bar.
What this means
The offer has to answer the specific reason that segment is about to leave. A discount does nothing for a blog reader who was never close to buying.
So what do I do about it?
| Symptom | Action | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| The current exit popup shows the same offer on every page | Split the popup config by page type and cart status before the next campaign launch | half day |
Final deliverable
A 3-row segment-to-offer table with headline, offer, trigger delay, and frequency cap for each of the 3 visitor segments.

Rent the Runway, exit-intent segment map (excerpt) Segment: Cart abandoner, dress in cart, 60s on page Offer: Extend rental to Sunday delivery, free Headline: 'One more thing before you go, free date-flex on this rental' Trigger: 40s delay, cap 1x per 30 days
Success criteria
You're done when you can:
- Each of the 3 segments gets a distinct offer tied to its likely exit reason
- No segment receives a generic, un-matched discount offer
- Trigger delay is at least 30 seconds per segment
