Score the Right Community Platform for an Outdoor Brand
Objective: Given YETI's outdoor/adventure audience, who want real-time trip-planning chatter alongside searchable, evergreen gear advice, score the five platforms from the lesson against that audience and pick one.
YETI's community team is choosing a platform for a new owners' community. Leadership is leaning toward Discord because 'it's what the outdoor gear brands use.'
Score Discord, Slack, Circle, Skool, and Reddit against YETI's actual audience needs using a weighted matrix, then recommend one platform with the tradeoff stated explicitly.

The process
1 step
Step 01 of 01
The lesson scores platforms on real-time chat strength, content discovery/organization, gamification, cost, and whether organic demand already exists there (Reddit's case). Picking wrong locks in the wrong culture permanently.
YETI owners need both real-time trip planning ('anyone camping at Big Bend this weekend?') and searchable gear advice that ranks and gets found months later. Which platform actually covers both, and what does the brand give up by picking it?
Procedure
- List the 5 platforms as rows.
- Score each 1-5 on: real-time chat, content discoverability, gamification, cost, existing organic demand.
- Weight content discoverability and real-time chat highest (both are named needs), weight gamification lowest (not a stated need).
- Sum weighted scores and rank.
- Write one sentence naming the tradeoff of the winner.
PLATFORM SCORING (weighted, 1-5 scale) Circle: chat 3, discoverability 5, gamification 3, cost 2 (~$89/mo), organic demand 2 -> weighted total: highest Discord: chat 5, discoverability 1, gamification 2, cost 5 (free), organic demand 3 -> weighted total: mid Reddit: chat 2, discoverability 4, gamification 1, cost 5 (free), organic demand 4 (r/YETI exists) -> weighted total: mid-high Slack: chat 4, discoverability 1, gamification 1, cost 4, organic demand 1 -> weighted total: low Skool: chat 3, discoverability 3, gamification 5, cost 3, organic demand 1 -> weighted total: low-mid Winner: Circle. Tradeoff: costs ~$89/month and loses Discord's real-time immediacy, but content actually gets found six months later instead of scrolling into the void.
Healthy
The matrix weights criteria by what the audience actually stated it needs, not by which platform is trendiest or cheapest.
Unhealthy
Picking Discord by default because 'outdoor brands use it,' then discovering six months in that no gear advice is ever findable again once it scrolls past.
What this means
A platform choice is a bet on which failure mode you can live with, chat that vanishes or content that's slower to post.
So what do I do about it?
| Symptom | Action | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Community picked Discord for a mostly evergreen-content use case | Pin and cross-post key threads to a searchable Circle or forum space instead of migrating everything | half day |
Final deliverable
A weighted platform-scoring matrix plus a one-sentence recommendation stating the winner's tradeoff.

Duolingo's community strategy leans on wherever organic demand already existed (Reddit threads, Discord servers run by fans) rather than forcing every fan onto one owned platform, letting each channel play to its own strength instead of chasing a single 'official' hub.
Success criteria
You're done when you can:
- Weights criteria by the audience's actual stated needs, not platform popularity
- Names the winning platform's real tradeoff instead of presenting it as a free win
