Finding the Real 20%: A Content Library Pareto Cut

Allbirds

Objective: Given a 50-page content export with traffic and conversion data from a footwear brand, apply the Pareto pass to find the pages that actually deserve a content refresh budget.

You're a content marketer at Allbirds with a small quarterly refresh budget, enough for 10 pages, out of 50 published guides and product pages.

Rank all 50 pages by contribution, isolate the top 20%, and defend which pages get the budget.

Free path (everything below is enough to finish)

FreeSort, rank, and compute cumulative contribution

Free, no account friction, handles a 50-row sort easily

The process

1 step

Step 01 of 01

Ranking inputs by output contribution to find the productive 20%

Pareto shows up everywhere the ratio varies but the shape recurs: a small share of inputs drives most of the output. The lesson's move is to rank every category by contribution and isolate the top fifth.

Sorted by monthly organic conversions, how many of the 50 pages account for 80% of total conversions, and is it close to the classic 20% figure?

Google Sheets— Import content-export.csv, sort by conversions descending, add a running total column.

Procedure

  1. Import content-export.csv and sort by monthly conversions, descending
  2. Add a cumulative-percent-of-total column
  3. Find the row where cumulative percent crosses 80%
Sample output
Rank Page Conversions Cum. %
1 Wool Runner size guide 340 9%
2 Best sustainable sneakers 310 17%
...
9 Care instructions 140 79%
10 Return policy FAQ 135 83%

Healthy

A cumulative curve that crosses 80% within roughly the top 10-15 pages of 50, confirming a real Pareto concentration worth acting on.

Unhealthy

A near-flat curve where conversions are spread evenly across all 50 pages, meaning there is no productive minority to concentrate on and the refresh budget should be allocated differently (e.g. by traffic potential, not existing performance).

What this means

10 pages out of 50 (20%) account for 83% of conversions here, a textbook Pareto shape, refresh budget belongs on exactly these pages, not spread evenly across all 50.

So what do I do about it?

SymptomActionEffort
A refresh budget was about to be split evenly across all 50 pagesReallocate the entire refresh budget to the top 10 pages by conversion before the quarter starts30 min
YouYou can do this yourself, no engineering access required.

Final deliverable

A ranked list of all 50 pages with cumulative-contribution percentages, and the top 10 flagged as the refresh budget's target list.

Sample output
Casper Sleep content audit (excerpt)

Top 8 of 60 pages (13%) drive 81% of trial-starts.
  1. Mattress size guide 212 trial-starts
  2. Sleep trial FAQ 188 trial-starts
Budget reallocated: all 6 refresh slots go to pages 1-6.

Success criteria

You're done when you can:

  • Correctly computes cumulative percentage and finds the crossover point
  • Recommendation matches the actual data shape, not an assumed 20%
