Hook Rate Autopsy: Diagnosing Why 4 TikTok Ad Openers Would Flop

RXBAR

Objective: Given 4 synthetic TikTok ad opening scripts and configs, correctly identify which would fail the Hook Rate benchmark, the native-creative standard, or the campaign-structure rules, without seeing performance data first.

You're a freelance TikTok ads consultant reviewing draft creative and ad group setups for RXBAR before they go live. Production budget is already spent; you only get to flag issues before launch.

Read each specimen cold. Decide pass/fail against the lesson's hook, native-creative, and campaign-structure standards, then check your calls against the answer key.

The process

Specimens to review

Would this opener survive TikTok's Hook Rate and native-creative standards? List every defect you find.

Sample output
SCRIPT 1 — 'Protein On The Go'
0:00-0:03 Slow zoom on RXBAR logo, brand jingle plays
0:03-0:08 Voiceover: 'Introducing RXBAR, the protein bar made with real ingredients'
0:08-0:15 Product shot rotating on white background
0:15-0:30 Text overlay: '6 ingredients or less. Available now.'

Specimen: synthetic, realistic

Check this opener against the hook and native-creative standards. Are there any remaining issues even though the hook itself works?

Sample output
SCRIPT 2 — 'I Ate 30 Protein Bars So You Don't Have To'
0:00-0:02 Handheld phone footage, creator already mid-bite, chewing, slightly shaky camera
0:02-0:04 Text overlay pops in: 'Rating every RXBAR flavor (ranked worst to best)'
0:04-0:20 Creator tastes and reacts to 5 flavors, casual tone, trending audio under it
0:20-0:28 'Link in bio, my #1 pick is restocked'

Specimen: synthetic, realistic

Review this ad group setup before it launches. What would you flag?

Sample output
AD GROUP CONFIG — 'RXBAR Retarget Push'
Audience: Interests (Health & Fitness, Protein Supplements) + Behavior (Recently viewed food delivery apps) + Lookalike (1% of website purchasers, US only)
Estimated audience size: 180,000
Creative variations uploaded: 1
Budget: $50/day
Bidding: Lowest Cost

Specimen: synthetic, realistic

Is this a defect-free plan, or is something still missing before launch?

Sample output
SPARK AD CANDIDATE — Organic post from @rxbar_official, posted 6 days ago
Organic performance: 62,000 likes, 340 comments, 1,900 shares, no paid spend yet
Proposed action: Authorize as Spark Ad, allocate 80% of next month's budget to boosting this post, remaining 20% to new In-Feed creative

Specimen: synthetic, realistic

Final deliverable

Sample output
Halo Top, Spark Ad creative audit (excerpt)

SCRIPT: 'Pint Nutrition Facts in 3 Seconds'
Hook (0:00-0:03): PASS — opens on a spoon scraping the bottom of an empty pint, no logo
Native fit: PASS — vertical, handheld, trending audio
CTA/Pixel: FLAG — no trackable link moment before video ends
Verdict: Launch-ready pending CTA fix

Success criteria

You're done when you can:

  • Correctly identifies both critical defects in Script 1 (no hook, corporate feel)
  • Does not flag Script 2's mid-action opener as a defect (recognizes the correct pattern)
  • Flags the over-targeted ad group's narrow audience and single-creative-variation issues
  • Catches the missing Spark Ad authorization step in Script 4
