The 14/70 Power-Member Audit

Zomato

Objective: Given a real 60-row member activity log, apply the 14/70 rule to find the power members who deserve a visible role before your top contributors churn unnoticed.

You're the community manager for Zomato's new Foodie Circle community, six weeks post-launch. Leadership wants to know who is actually driving the discussion before the community team decides who gets ambassador badges.

Rank members by contribution, identify the 14% carrying 70% of meaningful discussion, and flag which of them show early churn risk.

Step 01 of 01

Identifying power members using the 14/70 rule

The lesson's 14/70 rule holds across platforms: roughly 14% of members generate 70% of all meaningful discussion, and finding them early is the highest-leverage move a community manager can make.

Sorted by comments-started plus unprompted answers to other members, 8 of 60 members account for 71% of all discussion activity. Two of those 8 haven't posted in 9 days. What do you do first?

Google Sheets— Import member-activity-log.csv, add a 'contribution score' column (threads started x2 + unprompted replies x1), sort descending.

Procedure

  1. Import member-activity-log.csv and freeze the header row
  2. Compute contribution score per member and sort descending
  3. Mark the cutoff row where cumulative contribution crosses 70% of total activity
  4. Cross-reference that top group against 'last active' to flag churn risk
Sample output
Contribution ranking (top of 60)
  1. rider_priya_k score 94 last active 2 days ago
  2. foodie_arjun_r score 81 last active 9 days ago <- CHURN RISK
  3. spice_reviews_n score 77 last active 1 day ago
  ...
Top 8 members = 71% of all threads + replies

Healthy

The two flagged churn-risk power members get a personal outreach DM within 48 hours, before losing them quietly.

Unhealthy

Waiting for a monthly report to notice two of your top 8 contributors went silent for over a week.

What this means

A power-member list is only useful if it's checked for churn risk, not just contribution volume.

So what do I do about it?

Final deliverable

A ranked power-member list with the 14/70 cutoff marked, plus a churn-risk flag and a one-line outreach plan for each flagged member.

Sample output
Swiggy Foodie Table community, Week 6 power-member audit (excerpt)

TOP 14% (5 of 34 active members)
  1. tiffin_reviews_k score 88 ACTIVE
  2. hyd_biryani_fan score 79 CHURN RISK, last post 11 days ago -> outreach DM sent
  3. plateful_priya score 74 ACTIVE

Action: 1 personal outreach DM sent, 1 ambassador badge offered

Success criteria

You're done when you can:

  • Correctly computes a contribution score and ranks all members
  • Identifies the group crossing the 70% cumulative-contribution threshold
  • Flags any top-tier member showing churn risk with a specific next action
