The Length Call: Auditing a LinkedIn Post-Performance Export

Wise (formerly TransferWise)

Objective: Given a real 20-post LinkedIn export with character count, impressions, and engagement rate, classify posts into character-length bands and recommend a target band for next quarter's posting.

You're the content lead at Wise, the cross-border money transfer company, reviewing last quarter's LinkedIn company-page posts before setting next quarter's length guidance for the team.

Bucket every post by character-length band, compute median impressions per band, and settle the 'how long should our posts be' debate with the export instead of an opinion.

What you'll need

Free path (everything below is enough to finish)

FreeBucket posts by length band and compute median impressions per band

No account friction, handles a 20-row export without a paid analytics tool

The process

1 step

Step 01 of 01

Classifying posts by character-length band before judging performance

Three independent 2026 studies agree engagement rises with length up to roughly 2,500 characters, well past the old 800-1,000 character guidance.

The export has posts ranging from 180 to 2,700 characters. Which length band should the team standardize on next quarter?

Google Sheets— Import the export, freeze the header row, add a computed `length_band` column.

Procedure

  1. Import and freeze row 1
  2. Add a formula column: length_band = IF(char_count<400,'under 400', IF(char_count<=1300,'400-1300', IF(char_count<=2500,'1301-2500','over 2500')))
  3. Sort by length_band, then compute median impressions per band
  4. Cross-check whether the top band also carries the top median engagement rate, not just impressions
Sample output
LENGTH BAND MEDIANS (20 posts)
Under 400 chars (6 rows): 2,100 median impressions
  400-1,300 chars (8 rows): 3,400 median impressions
  1,301-2,500 chars (5 rows): 4,950 median impressions
Over 2,500 chars (1 row): 3,600 median impressions

Healthy

The 1,301-2,500 band leads on both impressions and engagement rate, so next quarter's guidance targets that band.

Unhealthy

Standardizing on 'keep it short' because that's the inherited house style, with no export ever checked.

What this means

Length is a distribution lever with real ceiling data behind it now, not a stylistic preference to default to the shortest option.

So what do I do about it?

Sample output
Coinbase, Q3 LinkedIn length-band scorecard (excerpt)

1,301-2,500 CHARACTERS, 5 posts
  Median impressions: 4,950 | Median engagement: 2.6%
Recommendation: standardize flagship posts in this band

UNDER 400 CHARACTERS, 6 posts
  Median impressions: 2,100 | Median engagement: 1.4%
Recommendation: reserve for quick announcements only

Success criteria

You're done when you can:

  • Correctly buckets all 20 rows into the four length bands
  • Computes median impressions per band, not just an average across all posts
  • Recommendation names a specific target band tied to the data
