The One-Platform Call: Auditing Where to Concentrate Budget

HelloFresh

Objective: Given follower counts, engagement rate, and buyer type across four platforms, audit which single platform the brand should concentrate on this quarter, using the lesson's buyer-mapping framework instead of picking the platform with the most followers.

You're a social media analyst at HelloFresh, the Berlin-founded meal-kit subscription company, ahead of a quarter where the team can only fully resource one platform.

The brand is currently spread thin across Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and LinkedIn with mediocre results everywhere. Audit the current spread against the lesson's buyer-to-platform mapping and recommend the one platform to double down on.

The process

1 step

Step 01 of 01

Picking one platform based on where the specific buyer scrolls

The lesson's Step 4 maps buyer type to platform: B2B SaaS to LinkedIn, ecommerce/CPG to Instagram and TikTok, local services to Facebook, developer tools to X. Beginners who spread across five platforms lose on all of them.

A CPG meal-kit brand is currently posting daily on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and LinkedIn, with a two-person content team. Which platform does the framework say to concentrate on, and which two get cut first?

Google Sheets— A tracking sheet with follower count, weekly posting frequency, and engagement rate per platform, filled in from each platform's native analytics.

Procedure

  1. List all four platforms with follower count and engagement rate
  2. Flag each platform's audience type: is this actually where a home cook browses recipe content, or is it dead weight
  3. Apply the lesson's mapping: CPG/ecommerce belongs on Instagram and TikTok, not Facebook or LinkedIn
  4. Recommend cutting the two platforms outside the mapped category, even if they have followers
Sample output
PLATFORM AUDIT (2-person content team, meal-kit CPG brand)
Instagram: 340K followers, 2.1% engagement -> KEEP, primary
TikTok: 190K followers, 4.8% engagement -> KEEP, secondary
Facebook: 210K followers, 0.4% engagement -> CUT, wrong buyer fit
LinkedIn: 12K followers, 1.1% engagement -> CUT, wrong buyer fit for a CPG brand

Recommendation: Reallocate the Facebook/LinkedIn posting time into daily TikTok content.

Healthy

The recommended platform matches the lesson's buyer-type mapping, not just the highest follower count.

Unhealthy

Keeping Facebook because it has more followers than TikTok, despite CPG buyers not being the audience there.

What this means

Follower count without buyer-fit is vanity data; engagement rate on the right platform for the buyer type is the real signal.

So what do I do about it?

Final deliverable

A one-page platform audit recommending exactly one primary platform and naming the two to cut, with the buyer-fit reasoning for each.

Sample output
Flipkart, platform focus audit (excerpt)

Recommendation: Instagram + YouTube Shorts primary, cut standalone X posting.

Reasoning: Ecommerce buyers browsing product discovery content are concentrated on Instagram and short-form video, not X. Current X account has 8K followers and 0.2% engagement, dead weight relative to team time spent.

Success criteria

You're done when you can:

  • Recommends exactly one primary platform, not a spread
  • Reasoning is grounded in buyer type, not follower count alone
  • Explicitly names which platforms to cut and why
