The Empty Shelf: Teardown of a Broken Shoppable Setup

HelloFresh

Objective: Given a synthetic but realistic TikTok Shop and Instagram Shop setup for a meal-kit brand, identify the defects that will keep the shop from generating sales despite a fully uploaded catalog.

You're auditing a newly-launched social storefront for a HelloFresh-style meal-kit spinoff brand before the team spends any ad budget promoting it.

The catalog is live and tags are added, but the team suspects the setup itself has gaps. Find the defects using the lesson's setup checklist and 'affiliate before paid' guidance.

Sample output
SOCIAL STOREFRONT SETUP NOTES, meal-kit spinoff brand

TikTok Shop: seller.tiktok.com account verified 3 weeks ago. Full 40-SKU catalog uploaded and live. Affiliate marketplace listing: not yet created, team was 'still deciding on commission rate.' Commission rate field: blank. Product videos posted to the brand's own TikTok account in the last 30 days: 0. Shop Ads: none running yet, 'waiting until we have some organic traction first.'

Instagram Shop: catalog connected via Meta Commerce Manager, synced with TikTok Shop's product list. Checkout status for the account's home market: not yet enabled, region eligibility was never checked before launch. Product tags added to 6 static feed posts over the past month, 0 Reels tagged.

General: the team's internal launch doc says 'we've done the hard part, the catalog is live, sales should start coming in.'

Specimen: synthetic, realistic

Final deliverable

A ranked defect list (critical/moderate/cosmetic) with the specific fix and lesson section backing each one.

Sample output
Flipkart storefront teardown (excerpt)

CRITICAL: No creators listed in the affiliate marketplace 6 weeks post-launch. Fix: publish a listing with a 12% commission rate this week.
CRITICAL: Product catalog synced but zero Reels tagged. Fix: tag the 3 existing top-performing organic Reels today, no new content needed.
MODERATE: Checkout unverified for two of five target markets. Fix: confirm eligibility in Commerce Manager before running any paid traffic to those markets.

Success criteria

You're done when you can:

  • Identifies the missing affiliate marketplace listing as the top defect, not a secondary one
  • Correctly flags the zero-video-content problem separately from the catalog-upload step
  • Does not flag either distractor as a real defect
