Draft the Thread: Hook, Body, Payoff Across Four Posts
Objective: Given a content brief for a DTC watch brand's new product angle, write a complete 4-post X thread using the hook/body/payoff structure per post, staying inside the text-only sweet spot and obeying the link-in-first-reply rule.
You're the freelance X ghostwriter for MVMT, briefed to launch a thread about why the brand skips traditional watch marketing entirely.
Write 4 posts, each with its own hook/body/payoff, that also work as a connected thread. Keep the main posts text-only, no images or links, and put any URL in the first reply.
Before you start
What you'll need
Free path (everything below is enough to finish)
Free, easy to keep each post's character count visible and reviewable before it goes live
Paid upgrades (optional, faster/deeper)
The free path (drafting in Google Docs, posting and replying manually) works fine for one thread. Buffer's free tier caps scheduled posts; a paid tier only matters once you're threading multiple times a week.
Ensures the thread posts back-to-back without manual timing, which matters since reply velocity in the first 30-60 minutes drives reach
No access? Post manually in sequence, then immediately add the link as the first reply and pin it
The process
2 steps
Step 01 of 02
The lesson's Step 1 argues a specific, contrarian angle beats a broad topic, 'marketing tips' loses, a precise stance wins, because the For You algorithm improves targeting only with a consistent topical signal.
Given the brief (MVMT skips celebrity ambassadors and traditional watch-industry marketing entirely), what's a specific, contrarian angle for post 1's hook, one sentence, no more than 280 characters?
Procedure
- State the contrarian angle in one sentence: what MVMT does differently, not a generic brand statement
- Write post 1's hook as a pattern-interrupt or bold claim, under 280 characters, no link, no image
- Add 2-4 lines of body evidence directly under the hook
- Close post 1 with a payoff, a question, contrarian conclusion, or 'save this' prompt, never a link
POST 1: Hook: We've never paid a celebrity to wear our watches. Not once, in over a decade. Body: Every competitor's margin math includes an ambassador fee. Ours includes better materials instead. That's the entire pricing story in one sentence. Payoff: What's a marketing line item your industry treats as mandatory that you think is actually optional?
Healthy
The hook is a specific, contrarian claim, not a generic brand statement, and the whole post stays text-only with the payoff driving a reply, not a link click.
Unhealthy
A hook like 'We believe in quality watches for everyone' names no stance and invites no reaction, it's marketing copy, not an X post.
What this means
A niche-specific contrarian claim gives the algorithm a clear topical signal and gives a stranger a real reason to reply; a generic brand statement gives it neither.
So what do I do about it?
| Symptom | Action | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Thread opener reads like an About Us page | Rewrite the hook as a specific claim someone could disagree with | 5 min |
Step 02 of 02
The lesson's Step 4 requires every post in a thread to carry its own hook, body, and payoff, not just the first one. Any link belongs in the first reply of the thread, never the main posts.
Write posts 2 through 4, each with its own complete hook/body/payoff, continuing the angle from post 1, then draft the first-reply link post separately.
Procedure
- Write post 2's hook as a follow-on claim, not a recap of post 1
- Write post 3 as the evidence post, one concrete number or comparison
- Write post 4 as the closing payoff post, the strongest single takeaway
- Draft a separate first-reply post containing the product link, pinned to the thread
POST 2: Hook: The math is simple once you see it laid out. Body: A typical ambassador deal runs 8-15% of a watch brand's marketing budget. We put that into the movement and the strap hardware instead. Payoff: Would you rather pay for a name on a billboard or a part inside the watch? POST 4: Hook: Here's the actual tradeoff, stated plainly. Body: You're not getting a famous wrist in an ad. You're getting a better watch for the same price. Payoff: Save this thread if you're deciding between a hyped brand and a better-built one. FIRST REPLY: Full lineup here -> [link]
Healthy
Every main post is self-contained with its own hook/body/payoff and zero links; the link lives only in the first reply.
Unhealthy
Post 3 or 4 drops a link directly into the main post 'just this once' because it felt natural, which suppresses reach on the whole thread.
What this means
One link inside any main post in the thread caps the reach of that post specifically, threads don't get a pass on the no-link rule just because they're already multi-post.
So what do I do about it?
| Symptom | Action | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Thread's later posts get noticeably less reach than the opener | Check every post in the thread individually for an embedded link, not just the first one | 5 min |
Final deliverable
A complete 4-post thread, each post with its own hook/body/payoff, plus a separate first-reply post carrying the product link.
See a reference example
ThredUp thread, sample (excerpt) POST 1: Hook: We list secondhand condition grades that most resale apps don't bother to define. Body: 'Good' means something different on every resale app. Ours means the same thing every single time, because we wrote the actual rubric down. Payoff: What's a term your industry uses constantly but never actually defines? FIRST REPLY: Full condition-grade rubric here -> [link]
Success criteria
You're done when you can:
- All 4 posts have a distinct hook, body, and payoff, not a recap of the previous post
- No main post contains a link, the link appears only in the first reply
- The angle from post 1 stays consistent through post 4 rather than drifting topic
