PKD vs. Estimated Clicks: A Keyword Targeting Head-to-Head
Objective: Given a shortlist of cybersecurity keywords, compare Semrush's Personal Keyword Difficulty against Ahrefs' estimated-clicks signal to decide which keywords are worth targeting this quarter.
You're the content strategist at TAC Security, the cybersecurity SaaS company. You have 10 candidate keywords and one quarter's writing capacity, and generic keyword difficulty scores keep steering you toward the wrong ones.
Pull both signals for every keyword, flag where they disagree, and build a ranked target list that a generic KD score alone would have gotten wrong.
Before you start
What you'll need
Free path (everything below is enough to finish)
Semrush's free account tier includes limited PKD lookups, enough for a 10-keyword shortlist
Free, and neither tool's UI shows both signals side by side
Paid upgrades (optional, faster/deeper)
Ahrefs' estimated-clicks column is a paid-tier feature beyond a handful of free lookups
No access? Manually sanity-check click potential by Googling the keyword and checking whether an AI Overview or featured snippet already answers it
The process
1 step
Step 01 of 01
The lesson explains Semrush's Personal Keyword Difficulty (PKD) adjusts difficulty to your specific domain's strength, while Ahrefs shows estimated clicks per keyword because some high-volume keywords get almost no clicks once Google answers the query directly in search results.
'vulnerability management best practices' has a generic KD of 71 (hard) but a Semrush PKD of 38 for your domain, and Ahrefs shows only 180 estimated monthly clicks despite 4,400 monthly searches. Do you target it this quarter?
Procedure
- Pull generic KD, PKD, and Ahrefs estimated clicks for all 10 candidate keywords into one sheet
- Flag any keyword where PKD is meaningfully lower than generic KD (your domain has earned authority here)
- Flag any keyword where search volume is high but Ahrefs estimated clicks is low (a Google-answers-it-directly trap)
- Cross the two flags: keep keywords that pass PKD but fail the clicks check off the list, or plan for a featured-snippet-targeted format instead of a standard article
vulnerability management best practices: Vol 4,400 | Generic KD 71 | PKD 38 | Ahrefs est. clicks 180 (4.1% of searches) -> LOW PRIORITY, high effort for low realistic traffic despite easy PKD. zero trust architecture guide: Vol 2,900 | Generic KD 64 | PKD 41 | Ahrefs est. clicks 1,650 (57%) -> TARGET, easy for this domain and clicks actually convert to traffic.
Healthy
Keywords are ranked by realistic traffic potential (PKD easy AND clicks high), not by volume or generic KD alone.
Unhealthy
Committing a quarter's writing budget to a keyword with easy PKD but a 4% click-through ceiling because Google answers it directly.
What this means
PKD tells you whether you can win the ranking; estimated clicks tells you whether winning it is worth anything. Both checks are required, neither alone is sufficient.
So what do I do about it?
| Symptom | Action | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| A keyword passes the PKD check but has under 10% estimated click-through | Deprioritize it, or reformat the target as a featured-snippet-optimized answer instead of a full article | 30 min |
Final deliverable
A 10-keyword target list ranked by realistic traffic potential, with PKD and estimated-clicks flags shown for each.
See a reference example
Yatra Online, Corporate Travel Content -- Keyword Head-to-Head (excerpt) TARGET: 'business travel expense policy template', Vol 1,900, PKD 29, est. clicks 61% -> easy and clicks convert. DEPRIORITIZE: 'what is corporate travel management', Vol 8,100, PKD 33, est. clicks 6% -> easy to rank but AI Overview absorbs almost all clicks.
Success criteria
You're done when you can:
- Every keyword decision cites both PKD and estimated clicks, not just one signal
- Correctly deprioritizes at least one high-volume, low-click keyword
