Building the Brand Kit That Makes Every Asset On-Brand by Default

MVMT

Objective: Build a real Brand Kit spec, fonts, hex codes, logo usage rules, for MVMT before onboarding two freelance designers, so every asset snaps into brand automatically instead of being checked by hand.

You're the founding marketer at MVMT. Two freelancers start next week making social assets, and nothing about the brand's fonts or colors is documented anywhere yet.

Turn the brand's existing visual identity into a Brand Kit spec that can be imported into Canva and mirrored in Figma, closing the exact gap the lesson calls out under Skipping the Brand Kit.

Before you start

What you'll need

Free path (everything below is enough to finish)

Canva
FreemiumStore the Brand Kit (colors, fonts, logo) so every new design defaults to it

Free tier includes one Brand Kit, enough for a lean team's first setup

Paid upgrades (optional, faster/deeper)

Figma(optional)
FreemiumMirror the same colors and fonts as a shared library for landing-page and dev-handoff work

Keeps web assets in sync with the Canva kit once work moves beyond social

No access? Skip Figma entirely until a web asset is actually needed; Canva alone covers the freelancer onboarding brief

The process

1 step

Step 01 of 01

Setting up a Brand Kit once so every asset snaps into brand automatically

The lesson's playbook names the Brand Kit as one of the two features (with Magic Resize) that cover 80 percent of weekly Canva output, and Common Mistakes warns that skipping it on day one means every later asset has to be checked by hand instead of snapping into brand.

Given MVMT's logo file, two brand hex codes, and a display + body font pairing, what exact fields does a usable Brand Kit spec need before a freelancer can open Canva and just start designing?

Canva— Canva's Brand Kit panel, then mirrored as a shared type/color library in Figma.

Procedure

  1. Collect the logo (primary + reversed/light version), two brand hex codes, and the display/body font pair
  2. Enter hex codes and fonts into Canva's Brand Kit panel so new designs default to them
  3. Write one usage rule per asset (logo minimum size, when to use the reversed logo, banned font substitutes)
  4. Mirror the same hex codes and fonts as a shared library in Figma so both tools stay in sync
Sample output
MVMT Brand Kit spec

Colors: Primary #1A1A1A (near-black), Accent #C9A24B (brass)
Fonts: Display, Neue Haas Grotesk Bold; Body, Neue Haas Grotesk Regular
Logo: primary mark on light backgrounds only, reversed mark on dark or photo backgrounds, minimum width 120px
Rule: no substituting system fonts if Neue Haas fails to load, use Helvetica Neue Bold as the only approved fallback

Healthy

Freelancer opens Canva, the Brand Kit is already loaded, and a new asset defaults to on-brand colors and fonts with zero manual checking.

Unhealthy

Freelancer eyeballs the hex code from a screenshot and picks 'a font that looks close', producing an off-brand asset that needs a rework pass.

What this means

A Brand Kit set up once removes brand-consistency checking from every asset review after it, that's the actual leverage, not the kit itself.

So what do I do about it?

No Brand Kit exists before a freelancer's first asset is dueBuild the four-field spec (colors, fonts, logo rules, fallback rule) before kickoff, not after the first revision round30 min
YouYou can do this yourself, no engineering access required.

Final deliverable

A four-field Brand Kit spec (colors, fonts, logo usage rules, fallback rule) loaded into Canva and ready to hand to two incoming freelancers.

Sample output
Rent the Runway Brand Kit spec

Colors: Primary #2B1B3D (plum), Accent #F2E9DA (cream)
Fonts: Display, Canela; Body, Söhne
Logo: wordmark only above 200px width, monogram mark below that, always on solid backgrounds
Rule: if Canela fails to load, fall back to Georgia, never a sans-serif substitute

Success criteria

You're done when you can:

  • Spec includes all four fields: colors, fonts, logo usage rule, and a named fallback rule
  • Brand Kit is actually loaded into Canva, not just written as a document
  • Rules are specific enough that a freelancer needs no follow-up question to use them
