The Pressure Test: Does Airbnb's Last 10 Decisions Match Its Stated Mission?
Objective: Apply step five of the lesson's mission framework, the pressure test, to a list of ten real-ish Airbnb decisions, and determine whether behavior matches the stated mission or whether the words, or the behavior, need to change.
Airbnb's brand team is refreshing its mission statement. Before publishing, they want you to run the lesson's pressure test: pull the last ten major decisions and check if they're consistent with what the company claims to stand for.
Score each decision against the stated mission ('Belong Anywhere') and flag the ones that don't fit.

The process
1 step
Step 01 of 01
The lesson's framework diagram ends with a pressure test, checking whether the last 10 big decisions actually match the stated mission, before publishing anything.
Airbnb's stated mission centers on belonging and community-driven travel. Given a list of 10 recent decisions (Categories browsing redesign, a crackdown on party-house listings, an ad campaign, a stock buyback, an AI-powered host-matching tool, a fee-transparency change, an anti-discrimination policy update, a luxury 'Icons' experience line, a layoff round, and a data-sharing partnership), which decisions clearly support the mission and which ones need the mission's language revised, or the decision reconsidered?
Procedure
- List all 10 decisions in one column
- Write the mission's exact wording at the top of the sheet for reference
- Score each decision Consistent, Inconsistent, or Neutral
- For every Inconsistent score, write one sentence: does the mission's wording need to change, or does the decision?
Pressure test, Airbnb mission ('Belong Anywhere')
Categories redesign (2022): CONSISTENT, surfaces underused local listings
Party-house crackdown: CONSISTENT, protects the host/neighbor trust the mission depends on
Stock buyback: NEUTRAL, financial decision unrelated to the mission's promise
Luxury 'Icons' line: INCONSISTENT on its face, flag for review, does 'belong anywhere' still mean anyone can afford it?
...
7 of 10 decisions score Consistent, 2 Neutral, 1 flagged Inconsistent for review.Healthy
At least 8 of 10 decisions score Consistent or Neutral, with a specific written reason for any Inconsistent flag.
Unhealthy
Marking every decision Consistent without checking it against the mission's literal wording.
What this means
A pressure test that finds zero inconsistencies is a sign the test wasn't run honestly, not a sign the mission is perfect.
So what do I do about it?
| Symptom | Action | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Mission refresh drafted without checking it against actual decisions | Run the 10-decision pressure test before publishing any new wording | 30 min |
Final deliverable
A scored list of 10 decisions with a one-sentence resolution for each flagged inconsistency.
See a reference example
DoorDash's own pressure test would likely flag its 2024 grocery-delivery expansion as borderline: the mission talks about connecting local businesses to customers, and national grocery chains are a stretch of 'local,' which is exactly the kind of tension a pressure test is supposed to surface before a rebrand, not after one.
Success criteria
You're done when you can:
- Scores all 10 decisions, not just the obvious ones
- Correctly flags at least one genuinely borderline decision instead of rubber-stamping everything Consistent
- States whether the fix is the wording or the behavior for each flag
