The Scarcity Checkout Teardown: Real Cue or Dark Pattern?
Objective: Given two synthetic checkout-page specimens with scarcity and loss messaging, identify which cues are real constraints versus manufactured dark patterns per the lesson's ethical-limits checklist.
You're a CRO associate at ThredUp reviewing two checkout page variants queued for an A/B test before launch.
Apply the lesson's 'Where loss aversion backfires' checklist to flag manufactured urgency before either variant ships.

Specimens to review
Which scarcity cues here are dark patterns, and which lesson rule do they violate?
Checkout page copy: '24-Hour Sale!' with a countdown timer that visibly resets to 24:00:00 every time the page is reloaded. Below every product thumbnail: 'Only 2 left!', shown identically on all items regardless of actual inventory count.
Specimen: synthetic, realistic
Are these scarcity cues legitimate or manufactured? Is there still a defect worth flagging?
Checkout page copy: 'This item has 3 left in stock' (pulled live from inventory) and 'Your cart is reserved for 10 minutes', which matches the real reservation hold in the backend. No countdown visual is used, just plain text.
Specimen: synthetic, realistic
Final deliverable
A completed teardown scorecard for both checkout specimens, flagging manufactured versus real scarcity cues with severity and lesson citation.

Warby Parker checkout teardown (excerpt) Specimen: 'Selling fast!' badge shown on every frame in the catalog, including frames with 200+ units in stock. Verdict: Manufactured. The badge isn't tied to real inventory data. Severity: Critical. Same failure mode as a fake countdown timer, breaks trust once a repeat shopper notices the badge never changes.
Success criteria
You're done when you can:
- Correctly separates the manufactured specimen (1) from the legitimate one (2)
- Names both defects in specimen 1 with correct severity
- Avoids being misled by the distractors in both items
