Setting the Bar: Auditing a Template's Data Fields Against a Quality Gate

Flipkart

Objective: Given a 40-row export of proposed brand-category combination pages with a field-count column, real search-volume data, and a link-equity note, apply a minimum-viable-page quality gate to decide index vs noindex for each row, filter out combos with no real search demand, and flag which live pages are missing crawl-budget infrastructure.

You're the SEO analyst at Flipkart auditing a proposed template for brand-plus-category pages (e.g. 'Samsung Refrigerators Online', 'Nike Running Shoes Online') before the dev team renders all 40 combinations from the marketing catalog.

Set a field-count threshold, apply it to the export, cross-check against search volume, and flag the sitemap-chunking plan for the batch that passes.

Before you start

What you'll need

Free path (everything below is enough to finish)

FreeRun the field-count PASS/FAIL formula across all 40 rows

Free, no setup, the whole audit fits in one spreadsheet

FreeCheck combined search volume per brand-category combination

Free with a Google Ads account, sufficient for a volume cutoff decision

FreeSubmit the sitemap and monitor indexing coverage

The only tool that shows real indexing status, not an estimate

Paid upgrades (optional, faster/deeper)

SEMrush(optional)
FreemiumCross-check Keyword Planner's volume estimates on ambiguous rows

Keyword Planner rounds low-volume numbers into broad buckets; a second source resolves close calls

The process

3 steps

Step 01 of 03

Minimum viable page quality gate

The lesson's quality-gate section sets an example threshold of 5 populated fields out of 8 (reviews, price, stock status, rating count, spec sheet, image count, delivery estimate, last-restocked date), citing Aleyda Solis's 'minimum viable page' filter as the standard sites use to survive core updates.

Of the 40 brand-category rows, 24 have 5 or more of the 8 fields populated, 11 have 3-4, and 5 have 0-2. Which rows pass the gate?

Google Sheets— Import field-count-export.csv, freeze the header row, add a PASS/FAIL formula column.

Procedure

  1. Import field-count-export.csv and freeze row 1
  2. Add a formula column: PASS if fields_populated >= 5, else FAIL
  3. Filter to the 24 PASS rows as index candidates
  4. Route the 16 FAIL rows to noindex, not deletion, in case fields get backfilled later
Sample output
PASS (24 rows, sample)
Samsung Refrigerators Online 7/8 fields index
Nike Running Shoes Online 6/8 fields index
FAIL (16 rows, sample)
LG Toasters Online 2/8 fields noindex
Puma Socks Online 1/8 fields noindex

Healthy

24 of 40 rows clear the gate and move to the search-volume check; the other 16 stay noindexed, not deleted.

Unhealthy

Indexing all 40 rows because the template rendered successfully, without checking what data actually populated each one.

What this means

A rendered page and a quality page are different things. The gate has to run on the data, not on whether the template compiled.

So what do I do about it?

SymptomActionEffort
A batch of pages ships with no field-count checkAdd the PASS/FAIL formula column before the batch goes live, not after a traffic drop30 min

Step 02 of 03

Fractal keyword pattern selection

The lesson's pattern-evaluation flowchart says a pattern only gets built if a dataset exists AND combined volume is worth the effort AND each page can be genuinely unique, skip it if any one of the three fails.

Of the 24 rows that passed the quality gate, 3 have under 50 monthly searches combined across all keyword variants. Do they still get built?

Google Keyword Planner— Look up monthly search volume for each of the 24 passing brand-category combinations.

Procedure

  1. Pull monthly search volume for each of the 24 passing combinations
  2. Flag any row under 50 combined monthly searches
  3. Cut the 3 flagged rows even though they passed the data-quality gate
Sample output
CUT (fails volume, despite passing quality gate)
Reebok Yoga Blocks Online 6/8 fields 14 searches/mo
Puma Water Bottles Online 6/8 fields 31 searches/mo

Healthy

A page only ships if it clears BOTH the data-quality gate and the volume bar, one passing check doesn't excuse the other failing.

Unhealthy

Shipping a page because it has great data, even though almost nobody searches for it.

What this means

Quality data justifies a page existing; search volume justifies spending crawl budget and dev time to build it. Both gates have to pass.

So what do I do about it?

SymptomActionEffort
A high-quality page gets almost no trafficCheck volume before build, not after launch, cut anything under your minimum threshold30 min
YouYou can do this yourself, no engineering access required.

Step 03 of 03

Step 5: Index Infrastructure

The lesson's Step 5 requires XML sitemaps chunked to Google's 10,000-URL-per-file limit, hub pages linking to groups of programmatic pages, and sitemap submission through Google Search Console with crawl-error monitoring.

The final 21-row batch is small enough for one sitemap file, but is there still a hub-page requirement?

Google Search Console— Submit the new sitemap and monitor the Coverage report for the first two weeks.

Procedure

  1. Add all 21 approved URLs to a single sitemap file (well under the 10,000-URL cap)
  2. Confirm each URL is linked from the /brands category hub page before submission
  3. Submit the sitemap in Search Console
  4. Check the Coverage report weekly for 'Discovered, not indexed' errors on any of the 21 URLs
Sample output
Coverage report, week 2
  Submitted: 21
  Indexed: 19
Discovered, not indexed: 2 (both missing a hub-page link, fixed and resubmitted)

Healthy

19 of 21 index within two weeks; the 2 stragglers get diagnosed and fixed, not just left alone.

Unhealthy

Submitting the sitemap and never checking Coverage again, assuming submission equals indexing.

What this means

Sitemap submission is a request, not a guarantee. The hub-page link is what actually gets a page crawled and re-crawled.

So what do I do about it?

SymptomActionEffort
Pages sit in 'Discovered, not indexed' for weeksCheck for a missing hub-page link first, that's the most common cause5 min
EitherYou or a developer can handle this, depending on your access.

Final deliverable

A 40-row decision sheet marking index/noindex/cut for every brand-category combination, plus a submitted sitemap and a two-week Coverage report follow-up note.

See a reference example
Sample output
Instacart brand-category batch, decision sheet (excerpt)

INDEX (cleared both gates)
  Organic Bananas Delivery 7/8 fields 1,900 searches/mo
  Trader Joe's Delivery Near Me 6/8 fields 3,400 searches/mo

NOINDEX (failed quality gate)
  Store-Brand Napkins Delivery 2/8 fields —

CUT (passed quality gate, failed volume)
  Specialty Vinegar Delivery 6/8 fields 22 searches/mo

Success criteria

You're done when you can:

  • Correctly applies the 5-of-8 field threshold to all 40 rows
  • Cuts low-volume rows even when they passed the quality gate
  • Verifies hub-page linking before considering the sitemap submission complete
