This is why a page can be objectively short and still feel exhausting. It is not word count that drains people, it is decision count.

Two kinds of load matter for CRO. Intrinsic load is the unavoidable difficulty of the task itself, entering a shipping address has to happen somehow. Extraneous load is friction your design adds on top: unclear labels, fields nobody needed shown up front, a pricing table with nine tiers stacked in one view. CRO cannot remove intrinsic load, but it can strip out nearly all extraneous load.

Progressive Disclosure Patterns That Actually Work

Progressive disclosure means showing the minimum needed for the current step, then revealing the next layer only once the user signals they are ready for it. Three patterns cover most real checkout, signup, and pricing work.

Multi-step forms over single long forms. Splitting an 11-field checkout into three short screens, contact, shipping, payment, does not remove any fields, it just stops showing them all simultaneously. 2026 checkout data shows multi-step flows outperform single-page by 28-35% for complex or high-value products, especially with a visible progress bar and no filler fields.   • Burying a mandatory field. If a field is required, showing it late doesn't remove the friction, it just adds a jarring "oh, one more thing" moment right before the finish line.

Common Mistake

Progressive disclosure hides sequence, never information the user needs to decide. If a fact would change whether someone buys, price, total cost, a required document, show it before they invest effort, not after.

The test is simple: would hiding this field speed someone up, or would it just delay them finding out something that changes their decision? The first is good UX. The second is a trust tax you'll pay for in your abandonment rate.
