A user lands on your website and has roughly 50 milliseconds to decide if they trust you. They are not reading your copy. They are scanning fonts, colours, spacing, and layout for signals of competence. Your best product claim will not overcome a visual impression of amateurism. Trust is built on layers, and the bottom layer is visual.

All three must be present for relationship trust. A brand might have high competence trust and low integrity trust (Apple is skilled but opaque on pricing). Users will buy, but they will resent it and switch if a competitor offers the same competence with higher integrity.
Building Competence Trust: The Power of Specificity
Humans are attuned to detecting fake expertise. A marketer saying "Our product is the best" triggers a skepticism circuit. A marketer saying "Our algorithm improves open rates by 23% for B2B tech companies in the 500-employee range" activates a credibility circuit.
Specificity is expensive. It requires real data, which is hard to collect and risk-laden to publish (what if your number is controversial?). Vagueness is free. You can claim "best in class" without evidence. But that freedom is exactly why specificity signals trust, because you are voluntarily constraining your claim to something falsifiable.
