Why Google ranks entities, not just keywords, and how to become one.

When you search for "Tim Cook," Google doesn't look for pages that contain those two words. It pulls up a panel on the right side of the screen showing his photo, job title, birthday, and companies he's run. That panel is powered by Google's Knowledge Graph: a giant database of real-world things (people, brands, products, places) and the relationships between them.

Entity SEO is the practice of getting Google to recognize your brand, your founders, and your products as distinct, verified things inside that database. Not just as strings of text on a web page.

Why Google Moved Away From Pure Keywords

Traditional SEO (before 2012) matched words. You typed "best running shoes," and Google looked for pages with those exact words. The problem: words are ambiguous. "Apple" could mean the fruit, the tech company, or a New York City nickname.

Google solved this with the Knowledge Graph in 2012. Instead of matching strings of characters, Google now recognizes entities: real-world things that exist independently of how you spell them. "Apple Inc." and "AAPL" and "the company Steve Jobs founded" all resolve to the same entity.

The practical effect: Google now ranks based on which entity a page is about and how authoritative that entity is. Keywords are used to match the query to the right entity, not the other way around.

What is an entity? In Google's system, an entity is any real-world thing that can be uniquely identified: a company, a person, a product, a place, an event, or a concept. Each entity gets an internal machine ID (called an MID) inside Google's systems. Once your brand has an MID, it "exists" in Google's world as a known, trusted object.

Why This Matters Right Now

The stakes for entity SEO have jumped since 2024, and stayed high through 2026, for five reasons.

AI Overviews and AI chat cite entities, not URLs. When Google's AI Overview answers a question, it doesn't scan pages, it retrieves trusted entities. A 2025 BrightEdge study found that 74% of AI Overview citations went to brands with Knowledge Graph presence. If your brand isn't in the graph, AI search effectively doesn't know you exist.

Knowledge Panels compress the entire SERP. When Google shows a Knowledge Panel for your brand name, branded search click-through rates typically rise 30-50%. Competitors lose the ability to insert themselves into searches for your brand.

Google ran a "Clarity Cleanup" in June 2025. Google removed approximately 3 billion low-quality entity entries from the Knowledge Graph in a single purge. This shows that entity authority now requires genuine third-party corroboration, not just adding a schema tag to your homepage.

It defends you against AI hallucination. If your brand is not a recognized entity, AI assistants will guess about who you are, what you do, and who founded you, and they often guess wrong. Being in the Knowledge Graph is the closest thing to fact-checking your own brand across the internet.

Gemini is trained on the graph itself. Google's Knowledge Graph has grown past its original 500 million objects to an industry-estimated 5 billion-plus entities and 500 billion-plus facts, and Google has confirmed Gemini draws on that same graph when grounding answers. A brand with a thin or nonexistent entity record isn't just invisible to Knowledge Panels, it's starting from a structural disadvantage inside the model doing the answering.

Real-World Example: HubSpot's Entity Moat

Real Example

HubSpot didn't just rank for "inbound marketing", they became the entity that Google associates with the concept. By 2024, HubSpot had a Wikidata entry (Q5926631), a Wikipedia page, a full Knowledge Panel, and over 12,000 co-citation mentions across authoritative domains. Their /about page carries a complete Organization JSON-LD block linking founders Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah as named Person entities, each with their own Knowledge Panels.

Result: HubSpot ranks number 1 for the head term "inbound marketing" (1.2M+ monthly US searches per Ahrefs, 2024), captures the AI Overview citation for that term, and sits in the top 0.1% of B2B SaaS companies for unlinked brand mentions according to SparkToro's 2024 brand-strength index. Unlinked mentions are a primary signal Google uses to verify entity authority.

The Omnisend vs. Klaviyo Entity Test

Backlinko ran a 2025 co-citation study to test how entity authority affects AI search presence. They ran 15 variations of email marketing queries through Google AI Mode.

  • Omnisend appeared in 12 of 15 total queries (80% presence).
  • Klaviyo dominated 5 of 5 ecommerce-specific queries.
  • In deliverability-focused searches, Omnisend maintained presence while Klaviyo completely disappeared.

The takeaway: Klaviyo had stronger Organization schema with multiple declared software products, while Omnisend had stronger unstructured co-citation across general email marketing discussions. Each brand "owned" the entity space that matched its third-party corroboration. Entity authority is specific, not general.

How Google Builds an Entity Record

Google triangulates signals from three sources:

  1. Structured data you publish. JSON-LD schema on your own website declares who you are.
  2. Authoritative third-party databases. Wikipedia, Wikidata, Crunchbase, LinkedIn, government registries, and industry databases corroborate your identity.
  3. Unstructured corroboration. Press mentions, podcast appearances, co-citations, and forum discussions where your brand appears alongside other known entities in your space.

When enough signals agree, Google merges them into a stable entity record with a unique MID. You now "exist" in the graph.

Step-by-Step: How to Build Your Entity

Step 1: Create your entity home

Pick one canonical URL, almost always /about, as the single place where your brand identity lives. This page should:

  • Carry a complete Organization JSON-LD block with @id, name, url, logo, foundingDate, founder, and sameAs.
  • The @id should be a stable, permanent URL fragment like https://yourbrand.com/#organization.
  • The sameAs array should link to your Wikidata Q-number, Wikipedia page, LinkedIn company page, Crunchbase profile, and official social profiles.

All other pages on your site should reference this @id using mainEntityOfPage, not redefine a new Organization entity. One entity home, many references.

Step 2: Claim a Wikidata Q-number

Wikidata is Google's most heavily weighted third-party entity source. A 2024 update made verified identifiers (Wikidata Q-IDs, ISNI numbers, LEI codes, government business registration numbers) worth far more than social profile URLs inside sameAs.

Wikidata accepts any company with verifiable third-party sources. You do not need a Wikipedia page first. A clean Wikidata record with cited references is often the fastest path into the Knowledge Graph for companies under $50M in revenue, yet over 90% of mid-market companies still do not have one.

Step 3: Build Person entities for founders and executives

HubSpot's Organization JSON-LD names Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah as founders, each linked out to their own verified Wikidata items and Person schema. A founder with a corroborated, standalone Person entity feeds authority back into the parent Organization entity through the founder property, which is exactly what the lesson's Step 3 describes. Both co-founders carry their own Google Knowledge Panels, distinct from HubSpot's company panel, each cross-referencing the other.

Result: HubSpot's own entity record (Wikidata Q5926631) carries a full Knowledge Panel and over 12,000 co-citation mentions across authoritative domains. (as of 2024).

Founder and executive Person entities feed directly back into the parent Organization through founder and employee schema properties. A CEO with their own Knowledge Panel measurably increases the company's entity confidence score.

Step 4: Earn third-party co-citations

Backlinko's 2025 co-citation study ran 15 email-marketing query variations through Google AI Mode, comparing Klaviyo against Omnisend. Klaviyo had stronger Organization schema declaring multiple named software products, giving Google a more specific entity to cite for commerce-heavy queries. Klaviyo dominated every ecommerce-specific query in the test, while Omnisend's strength showed up instead in general email-marketing and deliverability discussions where its unstructured co-citation was stronger.

Result: Klaviyo won 5 of 5 ecommerce-specific queries outright; Omnisend still appeared in 12 of 15 total queries by owning a different, more general entity space. (2025 study).

Co-citations are mentions of your brand alongside other known entities in your space, even without a link. An appearance on a respected industry podcast mentioning you alongside your main competitors is worth more to entity authority than 20 low-quality backlinks. Target:

  • Industry publication roundups ("10 best tools for X").
  • Podcast mentions on shows that cover your topic.
  • Reddit and forum threads comparing you to competitors.
  • Wikipedia references (even as a citation, not the subject).

Step 5: Align content clusters to a single semantic identity

Every content cluster on your site should reinforce exactly one entity relationship. If you are "the company that builds email marketing software for ecommerce," every cluster should orbit that identity.

Competing signals (a blog post about "SEO tips" on an email marketing platform) dilute the entity signal. Pick your semantic territory and own it completely.

Common Mistake

Common mistake: redefining Organization schema on every page. Many sites place a full Organization JSON-LD block on the homepage, blog posts, and product pages. This creates duplicate entity signals that confuse Google's merging algorithm. Define the Organization entity with its @id exactly once, on your entity home. On every other page, reference it with "mainEntityOfPage": {"@id": "https://yourbrand.com/#organization"} rather than redefining the whole object.

Common Mistake

Common mistake: thinking "we're not famous enough for Wikidata." Wikidata is not Wikipedia. It accepts entries for any company with at least two verifiable third-party sources (a news article, a Crunchbase listing, a government registration record). Most mid-market companies qualify right now and simply have not filed. A Wikidata Q-number is one of the highest-leverage single actions available to a growing brand.

Measuring Entity Authority

Entity SEO is harder to measure than keyword rankings, but these signals tell you whether it's working:

  • Knowledge Panel appearance: Search your brand name. A panel means you have an entity record.
  • AI Overview inclusion: Search your core topic queries. Are you cited in the AI-generated answer at the top?
  • Unlinked brand mentions: Tools like Ahrefs Content Explorer and Brand24 track how often your brand name appears on the web without a link pointing to you. Growing unlinked mentions signal growing entity authority.
  • Wikidata completeness score: Log into Wikidata and check your Q-number's property completeness. More cited properties mean a stronger entity record.
